Return of the Prodigals

At last week’s prayer meeting, the word prodigals came to mind. I wrote it down in my journal, then looked up the scripture for the Parable of the Prodigal Son. As soon as I wrote Luke 15:11-31, the pastor began the opening prayer and mentioned praying for prodigals.

On Sunday, April 12, 2026, I woke up at 5:00 a.m.—not unusual for me—but instead of closing my eyes for another thirty minutes of sleep, I turned on the TV and started watching JOY with Danelle Crawford. She said, “God is calling the prodigals home”.

Lately, many prayer requests have been for friends and loved ones who have strayed from their faith in Jesus. Most of us know at least one prodigal we have been praying for. I believe our prayers are being heard and answered. Praise reports are beginning to surface. Recently, a friend’s son entered rehab, and for the first time in years, honest communication with his family began the restoration process.

In verse 24 (NIV), the father says, “For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found”. There is a heavenly celebration for those who return to God, who will use every single person for His glory. Oh, what a testimony they will have!

Here are some encouraging lyrics taken from, Prodigal by Sidewalk Prophets:

It's been a long time since you felt peace

In the valley you made where you're not meant to be

Where the shame throws shadows on you

But don't you forget

Wherever you are, whatever you did

It's a page in your book, but it isn't the end

Your Father will meet you with arms open wide

This is where your heart belongs

In the places you're weak, He is very strong

Don't ever believe you don't deserve love

The same God that protects you when you're lost and alone

Is the very same God that is calling you home

Let your life be made new

As you come into view

Your Father's not waiting, no He's running too

He's running straight to you

Come running like a prodigal

Take a look at 2 Corinthians 6:2 (NIV), For he says, “In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.” I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.

I ask Jesus to anoint this prayer and grant our request according to our faith (Matthew 9:29). Pray the following prayer aloud and insert the names of the prodigals in your life:

Heavenly Father, You said in 2 Peter 3:9 that You don’t want anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. So, I faithfully intercede on behalf of __________. Minister to their hearts right now; removing the veil of darkness, bringing conviction to turn from their sinful ways, granting a sound mind, the mind of Christ. Break every bond that has a hold on them. Soften their hearts, open their eyes to the truth, and ears to hear Your encouraging voice calling them home. I pray __________ chooses life and returns to their first love, Jesus Christ, amen.

Post in the comments how many prodigals you are praying for, and when they return, share a praise report to encourage others.
