Suicide prevention is an important issue that requires awareness, empathy, and proactive support. We are changing the stigma of mental health issues, but only if we are willing to talk about them.

Back in my 20s, I was at a party where a casual friend asked me out. He was friendly enough, but I wasn’t interested. I honestly don’t remember what I said—partly because I was drunk—only that I felt uncomfortable after turning him down.  A couple of months later, I heard the heartbreaking news—he had taken his own life.

For years, I carried guilt, wondering if I personally played a part in his decision. The “what ifs” weighed heavily on me. I know there are no do-overs, no second chances.

After my own salvation in Christ in my late 20s, I repented and received God’s forgiveness. What I can do now is to encourage and pray for others who may be silently struggling with sadness or feelings of worthlessness—struggles I’ve experienced from my own difficult childhood.

Years later, another casual friend who went through a series of hardships shared a late-night post to all, saying his goodbyes; it would be his last night on earth. No. Not this time. I took a screenshot of his post and sent it to his local police. Each day passed, wondering what had happened. Was I too late? How would I know one way or the other? It was days later, when he posted he had been hospitalized, had time to heal, and gave glory to Jesus, our Savior, who carried him through!

Imagine yourself being truly happy again. It is possible. If you are struggling with suicidal thoughts, please know: this does not have to be your story. There is hope in Jesus. He sees you. He loves you. He died for you!

I pray that God’s hope, joy, and peace fill your heart right now. If you need help, reach out—call a friend, a church, 911, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988, or the prevention hotline in your state. In Texas, that number is 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

You are seen. You are valued. You have purpose. God’s love is real, and He is reaching out to you today. Will you take His hand? Take the courageous first step. It’s a step He has already taken for you, so step into His footprint.

If this message isn’t for you, perhaps God is inviting you to share it with someone who needs His hope today.
