Is Our Path Straight?

As we concluded our Bible study on Relaxed: Letting Go of Self-Reliance and Trusting God by Megan Fate Marshman, we focused on Proverbs 3:5–6 (NIV): “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
We were given two minutes to write an honest prayer based on this Scripture. I wrote: Make my path straight as I seek Your will for my life. Use me for Your Kingdom; as a prayer warrior, evangelist, artist, author, blogger—all for Your glory.
The next step was to invite the Holy Spirit to respond by writing His answer with our non-dominant hand. He replied: My child, I love you, and I see your heart. Walk with Me, seek Me, and I will make your path straight. I will use you to make a difference in the world.
WOOOOO, Lord!
Afterward, I went to a prayer meeting, but the doors were locked—no text, no email, no notice of cancellation. I saw a few people driving away. Still, I stood at the door and kept knocking. Eventually, someone heard me and let me in.
We met in the auditorium, and as I prayed, I wove between rows of chairs. At one point, I came to an opening between two rows: one narrow, the other wider. I instinctively chose the wider path.
Immediately, this thought came to me: People often choose the path of least resistance. Yet, He wants to make our paths straight in all our ways.
But what exactly does “He will make our paths straight” mean?
We may not always understand what or why God does what He does. As Isaiah 55:8–9 (NIV) reminds us: “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.”
I envision a beautiful, winding hiking trail that weaves around trees and boulders, requiring careful steps to avoid things that could trip us. It may be scenic, but it takes longer to reach the destination than a straight, clear path.
God doesn’t promise a life free of obstacles or trouble (see John 16:33). But spiritually, He aligns our will with His when we trust and yield to His Spirit. He helps us avoid unnecessary detours that could lead us astray. When we approach these forks in the road, we must allow Him to steer, correct, and confirm our direction, bringing us back into alignment.
As Isaiah 30:21 (NIV) says: “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’”
And Psalm 119:105 (NLT) reminds us: “Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.”
I want the light of God’s lamp—the Holy Spirit—guiding me, however He chooses to use me to make a difference in the world. It can begin with one small act of helping a single person, sparking hope, gratitude, and encouragement. That spark can ripple outward, creating an impact far beyond what we see.
Let God use you to make a difference. Choose to walk daily in His Word and discover the path laid before you. His promise is sure: when we acknowledge Him and seek His will in all areas of our lives, He will guide and direct our steps.
So keep knocking, keep walking, and keep trusting, because the path God straightens may not always be the easiest, but it will always be the one that leads exactly where you’re meant to go.
